Minimum Entry Rate:      $9.25/hr.

 

General Job Description

Position provides support in the daily management of International Programs study abroad area and English Language Institute (ELI); acts as an advisor for outgoing study abroad students and incoming international students; recruitment and marketing for study abroad programs and the ELI; processes applications and maintains records; general office skills.

Primary Functions

  • Act as an initial advisor to outgoing and incoming students with questions about study abroad and exchange programs.
  • Act as an initial advisor to prospective and incoming ELI students with questions about the program, application and visa process.
  • Recruit for UM Sponsored Study Abroad Programs: make presentations about programs to students in study abroad information sessions, classes, student groups, and other recruiting sessions.
  • Process ELI admission applications and generate immigration documentation.
  • Assist with study abroad fairs, pre-departure and re-entry workshops, and with student mailings
  • Coordinate and supervise study abroad ambassador volunteer activities: hold regular meetings to schedule speakers and plan and coordinate study abroad information sessions, classes, student meetings, and other recruitment activities.
  • Plan and attend various events associated with the department.
  • Complete general office tasks such as data entry, filing, organizing study abroad resource library, making copies. 
  • Maintain foreign-student database.
  • Assist with website editing and updating.
  • Act as a liaison for international students on campus.

Minimum Job Qualifications
High school graduation and two (2) years related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures: business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation and composition.
  • Effective interpersonal, public relations, and communication skills, including ability to work with diverse population and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills, and the ability to meet deadlines in a busy environment with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers and related word processing, spreadsheet and database software, with the ability to learn other software programs.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cultural differences as evidenced by international experience and previous contact with people of diverse cultures.
  • Ability to plan and schedule events.
  • Ability to use and troubleshoot standard office equipment; copier, fax machine, multi-line phone system.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and files.
  • Ability to problem solve, exercise sound judgment, and act with initiative.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge about different higher education systems in the world.
  • Ability for self-directed learning to remain current on program information.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills to all students, faculty staff and visitors to UM-M.
  • Demonstrated ability to make presentations to both small and large audiences.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Creative ability to prepare handouts and written materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of SEVIS.
  • Knowledge of website editing software.
  • Study abroad experience.
  • Experience in working with exchange programs.
  • Experience in advising international students.
