Materials Required for Exchange Student Application
Exchange students will be admitted as undergraduate (or graduate) non-degree students. The University of Montana's exchange partners should submit the following forms to International Programs by March 1 for the Fall term or October 15 for the Spring term. The completed materials must be submitted to UM by the exchange student's home institution and not by the student directly:
- International Student Exchange Application for Admission
- Two (2) academic letters of reference
- Short essay (about 200 words) stating the student's reasons for wishing to participate in the exchange
- Official home university transcript
- Study plan at The University of Montana (a list of desired classes), based on information in the UM Catalog
- Request for Issuance of DS-2019. The most important things we need to know are listed below. If possible, please type the information.
- Student name needs to appear as it appears on the passport (Nr. 1 Full name)
- How the student is planning to cover for her/his living expenses (Nr. 13 Source and Amount of Financial Support).
- If the student/parents are covering the expenses, please enter the amount under "Personal Funding".
- If the student has a government scholarship, please enter the amount under "Exchange Visitor's Government"
- If a private organization is covering the expenses, please enter the amount under "All Other Organizations" and the "Name of Organization".
- Mailing address of exchange visitor (Nr. 17)
- Proof of Adequate Financial Support for living expenses in the amount of $4767 per semester (in the form of a letter signed by student's parents, bank statement, or scholarship letter).
- Official English language proficiency score report showing one of the following: 61 iBT (173 CBT or 500PBT) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 5.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 69 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) is required for admission to undergraduate programs
- Review UM's immunization requirements and complete the Pre-Registration Immunization Requirements form.
- Housing Application; Students should submit electronically or by mail their Residence Halls or Lewis and Clark Village applications with the required payment ( $225 for residence Halls and $325 for Lewis and Clark Villages) by check, money order, or credit card directly to Residence Life Office, The University of Montana, Turner Hall 101, Missoula, Montana 59812, U.S.A.; separate forms are available for married students or students with children. Please note that student housing for the August term may fill up quickly, so please submit housing applications as soon as possible (recommended by March 1 for the Fall term and October 15 for the Spring term).
If a student is seeking admission as graduate non-degree status, then submit all of the above, plus:
- Evidence of completion of a Bachelor's degree
- If the TOEFL score is below 92 iBT (237 CBT or 580 PBT), the IELTS score is below 7.0 or the MELAB score is below 82, students may be required to complete English as a Second Language course(s) before they can take courses in their major. Please note that individual departments may have established their own minimum scores. One of the following is required for admission as a visiting student to UM Law School: a minimum score of 100 iBT (250 CBT or 600PBT) on the TOEFL, 6.5 on IELTS, or 84 on MELAB. Applicants for Law School should also submit a completed UM Law School Application for Admission instead of International Student Exchange Application for Admission.
