Faculty/Staff Insurance Coverage Requirements while Traveling Abroad

All faculty and staff traveling abroad on UM sponsored activities are required to have health insurance that meets the following minimum requirements:

• Medical Expenses:  $100,000
• Medical Evacuation:  $50,000
• Repatriation:  $15,000

You will need to submit a Faculty/Staff Insurance Coverage Form and a copy of your insurance identification card(s) to International Programs 30 days prior to departure, unless an exception is approved by the International Programs Associate Provost for a shorter deadline.  You can download the Faculty/Staff Insurance Coverage Form here.  This is not required for travel to Canada. 

UM Health Insurance Policy or Private Policy

If you are covered by UM health insurance policy, contact the Benefits Specialist in Human Resource Services at 243-4238, rita.garland@umontana.edu, or your health insurance provider directly to verify how your coverage applies abroad and learn how to submit claims while abroad.  Please understand that UM health insurance policies cover you for medical expenses only and have annual maximums of $2 million per person.  They also vary and are subject to change.  

MEDEX Travel Assist

Medex Travel Assist, a benefit offered to all MUS employees as part of the mandatory basic life insurance, provides you with medical evaucation and repatriation insurance free of charge, as well as a number of other services.  The plan has a combined single limit of $150,000 for all Emergency Transportation Services including medical evacuation and repatriation.  Please visit http://mus.edu/choices/additional.asp and click on the "Standard Travel Benefit Brochure" for more information.  At the bottom of the brochure, you will find a phone number for MEDEX.  Contact them to inform them of your travel dates and destination.  This benefit will also cover depentdents.  If you will be out of the country for longer than 90 days, complete the form on their website to ensure coverage.

HTH Worldwide Insurance Services Comprehensive or Supplemental Insurance Plans

UM faculty and staff traveling abroad on UM sponsored activities are eligible to enroll in an HTH Worldwide Comprehensive or Supplemental insurance plan through International Programs. The Comprehensive policy costs $52.75/month and includes all of the minimum required coverage.  The Supplemental policy costs $10.40/month and includes the required coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation.  To enroll, please submit your Faculty/Staff Insurance Coverage Form to Intenrational Programs with coverage dates and a check made payable to The University of Montana for the total amount required for your coverage period.  Please note that HTH only allows you to enroll for full month increments; they do not prorate partial month coverage.
