UM Foreign Travel Safety Policy

The University of Montana is dedicated to maximum safety and security for all UM students, faculty, and staff while abroad. To achieve this goal, a new process has been developed by International Programs and Environmental Health and Risk Management to record all UM International Travel. In this process, all UM faculty, staff, and students are required to register online through a system administered by International Programs as a “UM Traveler”. This will allow UM to provide assistance and vital information to the UM Traveler as quickly as possible. What constitutes "UM-related travel" is explained in the "Instructions for UM Traveler Registration" that can be found at www.umt.edu/ip/umtraveler.

To register, please visit www.umt.edu/ip/umtraveler. International Programs and Environmental Health and Risk Management will assume responsibility for all fees associated with the registration process.

As part of the travel registration policy, the Foreign Travel Review Committee will consider UM-related travel to countries with U.S. Department of State Travel Warnings. This committee will consist of representatives from the offices of International Programs and Environmental Health and Risk Management in consultation with the office of Legal Counsel. This committee shall determine what steps are necessary to address risks associated with travel to countries under a Travel Warning and, in some cases, limit or preclude travel. If the committee determines that travel will be permitted, and there is a travel warning for that country, the traveler will be required to sign an acknowledgement of risk form.

Faculty Directed and Affiliated Study Abroad Program Directors are also required to register program participants in the U.S. Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

International Programs staff will conduct several pilot programs to test the travel registration during January, 2012 and will conduct trainings during the Spring 2012 semester to familiarize the campus with the process. For questions regarding this policy please contact 243-2288 or studyabroad@umontana.edu.
