UM Student Health Insurance Abroad

UM Student Health Insurance Requirements while Traveling Abroad

All students participating in study abroad programs are required to maintain health insurance coverage throughout their entire study abroad period.  UM's minimum coverage requirements are:

  • Medical Expense Benefit:  $100,000
  • Medical Evacuation:  $50,000
  • Repatriation:  $15,000

In planning their Study Abroad program to meet the Health Insurance Requirements, Program Directors may choose to either:

  • Require the same insurance coverage for every student.  This may be the easiest method for short-term (i.e., 4-week) programs and the insurance cost can be built into the program cost.  IP has negotiated a Comprehensive Policy with HTH Worldwide Insurance Services that meets with UM's requirements.  Program Directors electing to enroll students in this policy may use the HTH Comprehensive Enrollment Form.
  • Allow students to meet the insurance requirements with any available insurance plan.  Program Directors must require each student to complete a Student Insurance Coverage Form, thereby ensuring that each student is enrolled in an insurance policy that meets the requirements.  UM Blue Cross Blue Shield Student Health Insruance meets all of the minimum coverage requirements.  Alternatively, IP has negotiated two policies with HTH Worldwide Insurance Services:  a Comprehensive Plan that meets all of the minimum requirements and a Supplemental Plan that meets the Medical Evacuation and Repatriation requirements, but does not provide the Medical Expense Benefit.  For more details about these HTH policies, please see below.  Program Directors may enroll individual students in these plans with the enrollment forms below.

Enrollment in HTH Worldwide Insurance Policies

Students participating in a study abroad program and UM faculty and staff traveling abroad on university-related activities are eligible to enroll in an HTH Worldwide Insurance Services Comprehensive or Supplemental Insurance Plan.

  • The Comprehensive Policy costs $52.75/month and meets all the minimum insurance coverage requirements (including Medical Expense Benefit:  $100,000, Medical Evacuation: $50,000, and Repatriation:  $15,000),  For detailed Comprehensive Policy information, click here.
  • The Supplemental Policy costs $10.40/month and meets the minimum insurance coverage requirements for only Medical Evacuation:  $50,000 and Repatriation:  $15,000.  For detailed Supplemental Policy information, click here.

Program Directors who whish to enroll their students in the HTH Worldwide Insurance Services Comprehensive and/or Supplemental Plans should download and complete the appropriate form(s) provided below or when they complete their Travel Registration record.
