Mission and Goals

The proposed major in International and Global Studies (IGS) is designed to make UM undergraduates more competitive in the global workforce by providing an interdisciplinary platform for learning about the physical, cultural, economic, social and political fabrics that connect humans across local and national borders

The IGS major is intended to provide students interested in international affairs with broad exposure to the politics, economics and cultures of the world. In addition, it will provide students interested in the scientific study of Earth’s natural systems with an interdisciplinary perspective that will enable them to work in the international policy or diplomatic communities.

Goals

The IGS major will enable UM students to develop the interdisciplinary awareness needed to be informed citizens, scientists, and policy makers.

By requiring two years of language training, focused regional study, a significant international experience and a senior thesis, the IGS major will help students develop the practical skill sets and the interdisciplinary breadth needed to work nationally, and internationally in particular countries and regions of the world and ultimately to operate more effectively as active and informed participants in the new global economy.
