AUSTRIA

Six-week, 6-18 credit music study abroad program in Vienna, Austria, occurring every other year, consisting of a selection of offerings in music, art history, and performance. AUSTRIA/GERMANY

After students complete an intensive three-week orientation program on campus, students live with host families and attend classes in Vienna, Austria and take a study trip to Heidelberg, Berlin, and Potsdam, Germany, earning 16 credits for the Spring semester.  Participants will have additional excursions in Austria, attend performances in Berlin and Vienna, and learn about German language and Austrian and German culture and traditions.   Students must have completed the equivalent of three semesters of German by the end of Fall 2013.  Students from all academic disciplines may apply.  Contact:  Dr. Hiltrud Arens, hiltrud.arens@mso.umt.edu, 243-5634.  Next Program:  Spring 2014.  More details...

CENTRAL EUROPE

Earn 4 credits discussing social movements and resistance, propaganda, and memory and memorialization in Nazi Germany and Soviet occupied Central Europe and investigate the relationships between communication, politics, and human rights through an exploration of early to mid-twentieth century Nazi and Soviet propaganda in the European nations of Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.  Davidson Honors College credit is available.  The course will be offered for 1 credit in Fall 2013 and 3 credits during Winter session 2014.  Students must enroll in both courses.  The trip is offered through EF Tours.  Upon submission of the application to Betsy Bach, students will be provided the information that will allow them to sign up for the EF Tour.   Contacts:  Sara Hayden, sara.hayden@mso.umt.edu, 243-4333; Betsy Bach, betsy.bach@umontana.edu, 243-6119.  Next Program:  Winter session 2014.  More details...

GREECE

Travel throughout Greece studying the art, archaeology, and culture of Ancient Greece. Students will encounter ancient culture (from the Bronze Age to the Classical Age) through extensive visits including Minoan sites (Knossos, Phaistos, Chania), Mycenaean sites (Mycenae, Tiryns), and major sites of the classical period in Athens, Olympia, and Delphi. Class will be conducted in museums and archaeological sites. No knowledge of Greek is necessary. IRELAND

Spend winter session in Ireland and earn 1 credit exploring the history, literature, religion, politics, and other elements of Irish culture. We will visit ancient ruins, medieval monasteries, beautiful sea cliffs, and historical sites. There is a 2-credit mandatory preparatory course offered during Fall semester. DUBLIN, IRELAND

This 3-credit program investigates how brain function is related to literary creativity by examining 20th century Anglo-Irish writers and analyzing language and literature using literary theory, evolutionary biology, and cognitive neuroscience. Students experience Irish culture and the arts using Dublin’s abundant resources. RUSSIA

This intensive 3-week program will be based in Moscow, Russia. The program is primarily a cultural tour and students will be staying in hostels. Cultural programs may include: a few days in Petersburg and a trip to Tolstoy's estate or to the ancient Golden Ring cities; in addition, students will attend ballets, plays, art museums, and monasteries. No knowledge of Russian is necessary. All participants will be required to register for and attend a 1-credit orientation course the semester previous to the trip. SPAIN

A spring semester program in Salamanca that alternates with the semester in Oaxaca, Mexico. Students will take an orientation class and leave for Spain at the beginning of Spring Semester. Students stay in private homes and attend language and culture classes at the host institute, which are taught by native Spanish instructors. Participants register for a full course load as well as participate in scheduled trips and activities. Three semesters of university-level Spanish required.
