Health Insurance
Student Health Insurance Minimum Requirements
All students participating in University of Montana-sponsored study abroad programs are required to maintain health insurance coverage throughout the entire study abroad period. University of Montana's minimum coverage requirements are:
- Medical Expense Benefit: $150,000
- Medical Evacuation: $150,000
- Repatriation: $15,000
Options for Meeting Minimum Coverage Requirements
Students can meet the minimum coverage by:
- Enrolling for UM's Blue Cross/Blue Shield student insurance policy for medical expenses and the HTH Supplemental insurance for repatriation and evacuation through the Office of International Programs, which costs $20.00/month or $5.26/week. Travel to Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Mali, Sudan, Somalia, Syria or Yemen require HTH Insurance’s approval prior to travel. Students may enroll in an equivalent supplemental policy through any insurance provider they prefer.
- Maintaining their current health insurance through a parental policy. Research coverage to ensure it meets requirements. In addition to the parental policy, students may need to purchase the HTH Supplemental insurance for repatriation and evacuation through the Office of International Programs, which costs $20.00/month or $5.26/week. Travel to Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Mali, Sudan, Somalia, Syria or Yemen require HTH Insurance’s approval prior to travel. Students may enroll in an equivalent supplemental policy through any insurance provider they prefer.
- Purchasing the HTH Comprehensive insurance policy through OIP or their Program Director. Students going abroad on a UM sponsored program and UM faculty and staff going abroad on university business may enroll in this plan. This plan meets all of UM's minimum health insurance requirements for medical expense, medical evacuation, and repatriation and costs $53.15/month or $14.91/week. However, it offers only minimal coverage for preexisting conditions. Travel to Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Mali, Sudan, Somalia, Syria or Yemen require HTH Insurance’s approval prior to travel.
