Computer Maintenance

4. Disk Defragmenter
Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk, so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the hard disk. By doing this, the operating system will be able to gain access to the files and folders on the hard disk much faster.
1. Here is how to start Disk Defragmenter.
2. Then, you will see a window that looks like the one below. The number of items shown will depend on the number of hard disks and patricians you have on your computer. If you have one hard disk that has only one patrician, you will see only one item (instead of five). If you connect your USB memory stick to the computer, it will be recognized as a hard disk, allowing you to defragment the files and folders on it too. Anyway, the idea is that you have to defragment the files and folder of each hard disk (or patrician) individually. For me, I have repeat it five times.
3. Select the hard disk (or patrician of hard disk) that you want to defragment and click on "Defragment". You will see how the hard disk (or patrician) looks like before the process and how it will look like after the process has finished. At the bottom of the window, you will see the percentage of the files that were defragmented.
4. When the defragmentation process is competed, you will see a window like the one below. You may close it or view a report of the defragmentation process.
5. As I mentioned above, if you have more than one hard disk or if your hard disk has more than one patrician, you should run the defragmentation process for each hard disk and patrician individually. When you have finished, you may defragment the files and folders on each hard disk (or patrician) as many times as you want. This will take care of the files and folders that Windows was unable to defragment the first time. I usually repeat the process twice in every maintenance session.
