Now that we know you are here on purpose... my name is Matt Riley and I am the University of Montana's new Chief Information Office (April, 2013). I am also new to the University of Montana, and eager to learn more about the specific needs and culture of the university as I come onboard. Some fast facts about me and my history coming into the CIO role for the UM include:
Higher-Education IT Experience:
Stanford University, School of Humanities and Sciences (May 2007 thru March 2013) and University of Redlands (August 1991 thru May 2007).
Types of IT Positions Held:
I grew up in IT, from a programmer/analyst position in my first role at Redlands, Systems Management, Network Management, Enterprise Services and Several Director Positions.
My last position at Stanford was the top IT leadership role for Stanford's largest School (H&S).
IT Likes: Flexible, helpful and creative 'value-add' services for the UM. I believe that we build confidence in our ability to lead and add IT strategy to UM strategy when we are successful with current projects, protect the university's data, enable technology and information usage and provide great customer service.
IT Dislikes: Inflexible, static processes and policy that put IT in the unenviable position of saying 'no' too often. Black-box projects that live only in IT. Lack of job satisfaction for the great people in IT roles throughout campus.
Fun Stuff: For those times when I am not advocating for and pushing UM IT on campus or across higher education, you will find me enjoying the Montana lifestyle with my family (wife Beth, daughter Brooke and son Thomas). We enjoy skiing, hiking fly fishing and pretty much all that the Montana offers.
The Office of the CIO is the central point for information technology strategy at the University of Montana. Through the efforts of previous CIOs Loey Knapp and Ray Ford, along with a larger team from the central and distributed IT units, an IT strategic plan exists and is being implemented at the university. Details of the plan are here: http://www.umt.edu/it/strategicplan/. Continued discussion, including an IT governance structure, is happening in the IT Senate http://www.umt.edu/itsenate/. Another great resource for insight into information technology at the UM is our IT annual report, which is in PDF form and available from our 'about' page here: http://www.umt.edu/it/about/default.php
IT changes are coming to the UM through the planning and coming together of all of out IT people and resources. It is truly a great time to be coming on board as the CIO at the UM. I feel privileged to join the team and honored to lead. I welcome questions and feedback as we chart the course for IT together ... e-mail me firstname.lastname@example.org or just give a call 406-243-5350 at any time.
