May 24 network outage will have broad impact

On Friday, May 24, all network and computing services provided by the University of Montana will be unavailable during early morning hours while electricians perform data center upgrade work.

What services will be affected by the outage?

All services that rely on the UM network will be unavailable during the outage, including:

  • Internet services
  • UM’s website
  • Moodle
  • CyberBear
  • Banner
  • Email
  • Campus wireless
  • VPN

The outage will affect campuses in Missoula, Butte, Dillon and Helena, as well as State and local partners.

The UM telephone system will remain available during the outage.

How long will the outage last?

System administrators will start taking services offline at 3 a.m. on May 24. As soon as the electrical work is completed, the network will be restored and services will be brought back online. All services are expected to be restored no later than 9 a.m.

Why is the outage necessary?

Electricians are performing work to prepare for installation of a new Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) battery backup system for a data center in the basement of UM’s Social Sciences building.
