UM’s Central Information Technology organization has created a new project management office through reorganization of existing employees.

Scott Holgate, who has been serving as manager of telecommunications and infrastructure for IT, will direct the new endeavor. The team will include Jace Laakso, a project manager in IT’s Technology Support Services, and Loey Knapp, currently serving as director of strategic projects.

“A project management office creates a focal point for IT project management, a consistent approach to projects within our organization, and a unit that can engage with projects across campus,” UM CIO Matt Riley said in announcing the launch.

Initially the new office will focus on existing data center and infrastructure design projects, then slowly expand into other IT projects. Scott says his team needs to be strategic about implementation of project management.

“We’re going to get a ton of requests to manage projects,” he says. “We need to determine which projects are strategic. We need to make sure we’re adding value, not just process.”

Scott has been a certified telecommunications project manager and is working on a Project Management Professional credential through the Project Management Institute.
