Public Folders in Office 365
Public Folders migration to Office 365 is scheduled for September 19 starting at 5 PM. During this time, public folders will be inaccessible. No emails will be lost during this migration.
What is Changing?
With this change, UM’s public folders will now be hosted off-campus. Once the migration will be completed, you will be able to access public folders again similar to how you accessed it before your mailbox was migrated to Office 365.
Public folders are designed for shared access and provide an easy and effective way to collect, organize, and share information with other people in your workgroup or organization.
What to Expect
The migration process will happen in two different phases. The first phase, which is the syncing of the public folder mailboxes, has already occurred. This means we are now synchronized with both our on-premise environment and to Office 365.
The second phase is the "Completion" phase. During this phase, public folders will become inaccessible. Once they're "locked", there will be one final "sync" process. Once this finishes, it will "unlock" public folders again and it will become available from Office 365. Unfortunately, there is no way around this outage as this is a limitation from Microsoft. IT staff has worked extensively with Microsoft to try minimizing the impact to campus. This outage is expected to take somewhere between 12-24 hours.
During the completion phase, no mail will be lost. Any mail that is sent to any public folder will be "queued" until the public folders become available. Once they're available, mail will be delivered.
