Vulnerability scanning

The University of Montana uses Nessus for network vulnerability scanning.  Scanning is initiated from a machine that has "itsec-nessus" as part of its name.  If you detect scanning and are not sure if a UM scanner is the source, please contact us at for verification.

In general, Nessus scans that are administered by the UM security team are designed to be non-intrusive and should not have any negative impact on the network.  If you believe any UM Nessus scanning activity is causing an operational problem with a campus device or service, please contact

If you are a campus departmental partner and wish to have access to the Nessus scanner for scanning your own network please send an email to detailing your request.
