Connecting for the first time

UMConnect is The University of Montana's official student email system. A UMConnect account and an easy-to-use Umontana alias are generated for every student. You access your UMConnect account using your NetID and password (which is also used to access other UM online services).

The steps below take you through the process of how to activate your UMConnect account and how to access UMConnect after the first time. You must close out of other Windows Live accounts before you began this process. Close out of that browser session and reopen your browser to clear out all cached sessions.

How to activate your UMConnect account

• From a web browser, go to:  www.umt.edu/umconnect
• On the Login page, enter your NetID and Password. Click Login.
• On the "UMConnect - Connecting for the first time" screen, write down the password. You will need it on the next screen and when you change your password once you have logged into UMConnect.
• Click on the "Activate" button.
• At the "Windows Live" screen, provide the requested account information. Enter the password into the password field.
• Review and accept the Windows Live service agreement and privacy statement.
• On the Microsoft Outlook Web App screen, choose the Time zone: (GMT-07:00 Mountain Time).
• Click OK.
• You are now in your UMConnect Inbox.  Please change your password during your first visit. Always sign out of your UMConnect account (upper right corner of your Inbox) and close your browser when you are finished.

How to login to UMConnect in the future

UMConnect is hosted by Microsoft. It is a separate account with a unique username and password that are NOT synchronized with the campus hosted NetID login. However, there is a secure one way trust between UM and Microsoft that allows you to access UMConnect using your NetID and password. You can access UMConnect and other Microsoft-hosted services using this secure channel by going to onestop.umt.edu or www.umt.edu/umconnect and logging in with your NetID and NetID password (not your UMConnect password).

• Logging into UMConnect through www.umt.edu/umconnect:
• From a web browser, go to: www.umt.edu/umconnect
• On the Login page, enter your NetID and password.
• Click Login.
• You are now in your UMConnect email account.

If you access your UMConnect account through another web site (i.e. outlook.live.com or outlook.com), you will have to use your Windows Live login (NetID@umconnect.umt.edu) and password you setup during the activation process.
