VPN connection for Mac

Note: For those who upgraded from MacOS 10.5 to MacOS 10.6, it may be necessary to re-download and reinstall the VPN software, even if the versions appear to be the same. Once reinstalled, the current version should work.

From your desktop or the dock, click on the VPNClient icon. If you do not have this icon, follow these steps:

  • From your hard drive, open the Applications folder.
  • Scroll to the VPNClient application.
  • Drag this icon to the dock or to your desktop to create a shortcut (NOTE: when dragging to the desktop, press the Option and Apple keys while dragging.)
  • The VPN Client window displays. Under Connection Entries, the VPN Client file will display a list of profile options: UMVPNWIRELESS or UMVPNEXTERNAL.
  • Highlight the appropriate profile and click Connect to open the User Authentication window.
  • Enter your NetID and Password and click OK . (If you do not know your NetID, Log on to CyberBear and click on Personal Information. Click on NetID. The NetID for students is in the form of first initial, last initial followed by 6 digits (i.e. ab123456). The NetID for faculty and staff is in the form of first initial, last initial followed by 6 digits and an “e” for employee (i.e. ab123456e). Your initial password should be the last six digits of your University ID number. Contact IT Central, 243-HELP, if you are unable to log- in to the VPN software.
  • A Welcome to UM network window displays. After reading the contents of this window, click Continue .
  • Do NOT close the VPN Client Window. Minimize this window to the dock by clicking “-“ at the top left corner of the window. This window must be active during the session.
  • You now have network connectivity from your computer.
