VPN installation guide for Mac 10.4
Virtual private networking (VPN) software is used to ensure that all communications between the user's wireless device and the wireless access point (WAP) are encrypted, and thus safe from being intercepted by other users. Following are procedures for installing VPN software on Macintosh computers running MacOS 10.4.
STEP 1: Download installer
- Click on the Download Wireless Profile button. Your internet browser will download the file UMVPNWIRELESS.pcf to your computer.
- Click on Download File in the Mac OSX section. Your browser should download a file similar to vpnclient- darwin-(version).dmg.

Click on the file from step b. It should create a container file “CISCOVPNClient.”
STEP 2: Install the VPN software to your computer
- Double-click on the Cisco VPN Client.mpkg file in container file from Step 1.
- A “Welcome to the CISCO VPN Client Installer” window displays. Click Continue .
- A “Software License Agreement” window displays. Once you have read the Agreement, Click Continue .
- Click Agree to agree to the terms.
- At the “Select a Destination” window, click on your Hard Drive .
- A green arrow displays over the hard drive icon confirming the destination selection. Click Continue .
- From the “Easy Install” window, click Install or Upgrade if you are upgrading from an earlier version.
- An Authentication window will display, enter your computer's administrator password. Click OK
- At “The software was successfully installed” window, click Close .

Move the following items you copied to your desktop in Step 1 to the Trash: “CISCOVPNClient” container file and vpnclient-darwin-(version).dmg.
STEP 3: Configuring the Network for the VPN
- Open System Preferences under the Apple icon.
- Click on Network .
- In the pull down window next to Location , select Automatic or New Location and type in a location name (possible name: UMWireless).
- In the pull down window next to Show , select AirPort . Click the Configure button.
- Click the TCP/IP tab and in the pull down window next to Configure , select Using DHCP , and click Apply Now .
- If the Airport status does not appear in the menu bar, click the Airport tab and select Show Airport Status in the menu bar at the bottom and click Apply Now .

Restart the computer.
STEP 4: Final Setup
- From your Hard Drive, Open the Applications folder.
- Scroll to the VPNClient Application.
- Drag this icon to the dock or to your desktop to create a shortcut (Note: when dragging to the desktop, press the Option and Apple keys while dragging.)
- Double-click on the VPNClient shortcut. Note: AirPort must be turned on for this to work. To the right of the Menu Bar, select the fan shaped icon. Select “Turn AirPort On.” A window may display that says: None of your wireless networks can be found. Would you like to join the open wireless named “Umaps?” Click Yes .
- The VPNClient window displays. Select Import.
- Browse to the location where your browser downloaded the “UMVPNWIRELESS.pcf” file in Step 1.
- Click OK at the “The VPN connection entry…was successfully imported” window.
- Close all other open windows.
- Move the following item to the trash from the desktop:
UMVPNWIRELESS.pcf. - The Cisco VPN software is now installed on your computer.
- Finally, return to the VPN File Downloads page and click on the link Connection Procedures for your platform, and follow those instructions to use the VPN Software.
Note: Mac users must use Umaps for wireless access.
