VPN installation guide for Windows

Virtual private networking (VPN) software is used to ensure that all communications between the user's device and the UM external access point are encrypted, and thus safe from being intercepted by other users. Following are procedures for installing VPN software on PC's running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

STEP 1: Download and Unzip the Installer

  • Click on download the wireless profile here. A File Download window displays. Click Save. Save the Wireless Profile to your desktop. The file name is: UMVPNWIRELESS.PCF
  • Click on Cisco License Agreement. After you have read the agreement, click on I Agree at the bottom of the agreement. Close the Download Complete window if it is open.
  • On the VPN file download page, you have two client options depending on your computer's processor: 32-bit (XP/Vista/Windows 7) or 64-bit (Vista/Windows 7 only). Click the Download button next to the appropriate client for your computer: XP/Vista/Windows 7 Client - 32-bit or Vista/Windows 7 Client - 64-bit .
  • A File Download web page will display. Some computers with Internet Explorer have security settings that will not allow the download to continue. The Internet Explorer Information Bar (located below the toolbar) will display with the following text: “To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer. Click here for options... Click on this text and select Download File.
  • A File Download window displays. Click Run.
  • A second Internet Explorer - Security Warning window displays. Click Run. (Vista: Right-click file and select Extract All.)
  • A WinZip Self-Extractor window displays. Browse and select a folder that will hold the extracted files and click Unzip. Be sure you pay close attention to the location and name of this folder, as you will need to locate it in order to run the installer.
  • A WinZip Self-Extractor window displays telling you that 10 files (7 files - Windows 7 64-bit  extraction) unzipped successfully. Click OK.
  • Close the WinZip Self-Extractor window.
  • Close the IT wireless access web page.

STEP 2: Install the VPN software to your computer

(Vista users: if there is a previous version of the Cisco client already installed on your computer, it must be uninstalled before attempting to install this version.)

  • After the unzip process, the installation may begin automatically. If it doesn't, browse to the folder where you extracted the VPN files. Double-click on the file: vpnclient_setup.exe
  • A “Welcome” window displays. Click Next.
  • Another screen may display warning you to close all open applications.
  • On the next screen, click on I accept the license agreement or click Yes.
  • The next screen lists the default destination folder. Click Next.
  • The next screen reads “Ready to install the application.” Click Next. The program begins installing. This may take some time. (Vista: User Account Control may display a window asking whether to allow this program to be trusted or not. Select Allow.)
  • The following screen should read “VPN client has been successfully installed.” Click Finish.
  • A final screen displays telling you to restart your computer in order for changes to take effect. Click Yes.

STEP 3: Final Setup

  • Log back in to your computer.
  • Create a shortcut for the VPN client on your desktop. Go to the Start Menu/Programs/Cisco Systems VPN client. The icon is a gold padlock. Right click on the VPN Client icon and select Send To and then Desktop.
  • Double click the VPN client icon, which is now on your desktop. This will launch the VPN Client software.
  • Click on the Import button and navigate to your desktop and open the wireless profile: UMVPNWIRELESS.PCF
  • Click OK on the “…successfully imported” window.
  • The set-up is now complete.
  • Finally, return to the VPN File Downloads page and click on the link Connection Procedures for your platform, and follow those instructions to use the VPN Software.

Note: Vista users must use Umaps for wireless access.
