Primary Functions

  • Position reports to the Chair for the Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects (IRB) and is the primary liaison between the IRB and University Investigators. This position is also responsible for all IRB oversight and administration. Duties include, but are not limited to: recordkeeping oversight (protocols, minutes, training, correspondence); creating and maintaining standard operating procedures for the protection of human subjects in research; reviewing and revising IRB policies as needed per federal guidelines; coordinating and scheduling IRB meetings; minute-taking during meetings; all follow-up communications and correspondence resulting from IRB meetings; interfacing with researchers concerning writing and revising human subject proposals; triaging IRB proposals for completeness and comprehension; interpreting and communicating in-depth knowledge of federal regulations pertinent to use of human subjects in research; advising PI-s and research staff; representing institution to regulatory agencies; monitoring and filing paperwork necessary to keep Federal Wide Assurance up-to-date and approved; coordinating all IRB-related activities; supporting the Chair; assisting with administrative duties as needed.

  • Position will demonstrate: independent thinking and problem solving abilities; professionalism and customer service skills; ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously as required to successfully perform the job functions; skill in effectively collecting, recording, maintaining, cataloging and sharing information; knowledge of federal regulatory agency policy and oversight concerning the use of human subjects in research; knowledge of the Belmont Report and 45 CFR 46; proficiency in utilizing bundled software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Internet browsers; effective communication skills including the ability to interact with institutional colleagues with the utmost professionalism and confidentiality in both verbal and written communications; excellent organizational skills and time management; ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • High School graduation and three (3) years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Effective interpersonal, customer service, and oral communication skills, including ability to work with diverse population and build positive relationships
  • Skill in effectively collecting, recording, maintaining, cataloging and sharing information
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulatory agency policy and oversight concerning the use of human subjects in research
  • Skill in the operation of personal computers, related word processing, spreadsheet and database software with the ability to learn other software
  • Demonstrated knowledge of training and supervisory practice and procedures
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills and ability to meet deadlines in a busy environment with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
