Primary Functions

  • Position assists the Division of Biological Sciences department in the daily operations of a molecular virology research laboratory. Duties include, but are not limited to: maintaining the general lab area, including cleaning glassware and making stock solutions; maintaining supplies of chemicals, reagents and other lab materials; performing experimental procedures as directed by supervisor; preparing lab solutions and buffers; managing the lab’s inventory; processing experimental data; training other laboratory personnel

  • Position will demonstrate: knowledge of laboratory techniques and protocols; knowledge of the following types of instrumentation (not limited to): autoclaves, shaking incubators, centrifuges and ultra- centrifuges, PCR machines, gel electrophoresis equipment, microscopes (inverted and regular), spectrometers, protein concentration and dialysis methods, sonicator, Parr bomb, basic chromatography by ion exchange and size exclusion; effective interpersonal, public relations, and communication skills, including ability to work with a diverse population; effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to complete tasks while paying attention to detail; skill in the operation of personal computers and related word processing, and database software with the ability to learn other software; ability to generate reports; maintain accurate files; knowledge of supplies, equipment and/or services, ordering, and inventory control; ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment and act with initiative
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • High school graduation and two (2) years of experience in a laboratory setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Effective interpersonal, public relations, and communication skills, including ability to work with a diverse population

  • Physical Requirements

    Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50# for short distances. Must be able to stand or sit at a lab bench for several hours at a time.
