Primary Functions

  • Position performs technical and professional work to include chemical assays (independently interpret physical data; refines techniques and methods; analyzes work produced and corrects errors); writes reports on work accomplished
  • Position demonstrates knowledge of chemistry and separation science and illustrates skill in organic chemistry techniques including the handling of air- sensitive compounds; demonstrates ability to follow written and/or oral instructions; works with little direct supervision; maintains an organized, safe work environment; maintains detailed laboratory notebooks
  • Develops new protocols to separation of organic chemical ligands and probes; organizes and stores data (interprets data; confirms findings; compiles and presents scientific data/reports); operates, troubleshoots, and maintains existing and new highly technical instruments and equipment (HPLC, Rotary Evaporators, vacuum pumps, Kugelrohr apparatus, medium Pressure chromatography, solvent purification apparatus, and peptide synthesizer); demonstrates skill in the operation of personal computers and related software programs (MS Word, Excel, ChemDraw and PowerPoint) with the ability to learn other software
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a divers group of individuals; interacts with laboratory supervisor weekly to assist in data interpretation, experimental design, preparations and set-up
  • Provides laboratory maintenance (accurately makes reagents and buffers; purifies organic chemicals; compiles and presents oral & written scientific data and reports; handles air-sensitive compounds; conducts recrystallization and distillation to establish chemical purity; maintains a list of and [re]orders stock reagents; performs repetitive and complex tasks; work is performed in a laboratory spending a significant amount of time at experimental benches; regularly handles organic solvents and reagents; must be able to work irregular hours including nights and weekends as needed
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, and/or a related field and three (3) years of related experience, including experience in the laboratory, or a combination of experience and education
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of chemistry, separation science, and laboratory techniques and protocols
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret information and make sound experimental and theoretical recommendations
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair instruments and equipment
  • Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to maintain accurate records with attention to detail
  • Ability to compile and present scientific data/reports
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers and related software programs
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, problem solving, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to ability to meet deadlines with attention to detail and act with initiative
