Entry Rate: Position is designed for a Career Ladder; depending on experience and certification, may be hired as Budget Analyst I: $14.135/hr. - $14.205/hr., or Budget Analyst II: $15.407/hr. - $16.00/hr.

Primary Functions

  • Position is responsible for the timely processing of grant proposals, reconciliation of grants, providing timely budget reports to Principal Investigators and general grant maintenance. Duties include but are not limited to: reviewing grant budgets prior to proposal submittal; educating and guiding Principal Investigators on proper budgeting techniques and figures (calculating indirect costs and cost match); preparing and analyzing accounting information; sharing detailed analysis with others and making suggestions for modification; budget process improvement (developing internal grant budget preparation and financial procedures to ensure compliance with established policies); interpreting complex policies and procedures to analyze and interpret UM state, federal, and private funding agency rules and regulations to provide assistance on the grant management process and evaluating conflicting regulations; serving as a liaison between the College of Forestry Accounting Office and the campus community

  • Position will demonstrate knowledge of budgeting and accounting methodology; learn and apply The University of Montana, state, federal, and grant-related policies and procedures and accounting practices; demonstrate proficiency in use of personal computer and related spreadsheet, word processing, and database software (MS Word, Excel, Access) with the ability to learn new software; effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to establish positive working relationships with a diverse group of individuals; demonstrate ability to effectively explain detailed financial information and concepts to others; ability to problem solve and exercise sound judgment; effective organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills with the ability to perform tasks with a great attention to detail; demonstrate analytical skills to interpret data, prepare related reports and documents, and assess outcomes; demonstrate ability to maintain strict confidentiality and to work projects independently
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • High School graduation and four (4) years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with budgeting and accounting methodology
  • Demonstrated written communication skills, grammar and composition including the ability to proofread and edit materials
  • Effective interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to establish positive working relationships
  • Demonstrated skill in use of personal computers and related software (MS Word, Excel, Access)
  • Ability to explain and share information with others
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret complex financial information
