Primary Functions

  • Position is responsible for the care and security of the Mansfield Library during the weekends and evenings. Position directly supervises student employees in his/her area of responsibility during evenings and weekends. Duties include, but are not limited to: providing excellent customer service to patrons and colleagues, hiring, training, scheduling and supervising several part-time student employees regarding circulation policies, procedures and tasks such as shelving and shifting materials as well as building security and emergency procedures; overseeing access services tasks during assigned shift including opening and closing the library, overseeing security of the building and the library collections; serving as back-up supervisor for the library copy center, assisting with the preparation of daily deposits; using automated systems to manage database records including making corrections to patron library records, adjusting patron accounts for appropriate fees and fines, running reports, and processing reserve materials; and performing tasks related to providing services to patrons, including verifying student registration, checking out and receiving materials, explaining library policy, receiving payments for fees and fines. Position is required to work an alternative work schedule, including some evening and weekend hours; schedule may vary, flexibility in schedule is required [Wednesday through Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; one (1) hour during the week for a staff meeting; shift times include a one (1) hour, unpaid, lunch break]; additional duties may be assigned to meet the changing requirements and dynamics of the unit and the Mansfield Library

  • Position will demonstrate: broad knowledge of the Automated Library System, internet, and word processing programs including precise knowledge of the circulation portion of that system in order to assist patrons and manage database records; working knowledge of customer service skills; good interpersonal, listening and communication skills; broad knowledge of departmental procedures, conflict resolution skills, and problem-solving skills are important to maintaining a safe and secure environment; thorough knowledge of circulation policies, procedures and tasks; knowledge of building security and emergency procedures; ability to train student workers in a variety of tasks; excellent organizational and time management skills; knowledge of shelving and shifting; knowledge of library reserve material procedures; knowledge of cash handling and accounts management procedures; demonstrated skill and ability to operate personal computers and related word processing, spreadsheet and database software (Banner) is important.
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • High school graduation and one (1) year related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and work experience in supervisory and training techniques
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skill and orientation
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, other agencies and the general public
  • Demonstrated skill in conflict resolution and problem solving
  • Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to prioritize tasks
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of computers and computer peripherals, copy machine, audiovisual equipment, multi-line phones, and other standard office equipment
  • Knowledge of and ability to navigate a variety of research databases, software, and websites
  • Proven ability to provide and follow instructions exhibiting attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, demonstrate initiative and use sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor and composure while serving the public
