When he saw his first Page 1 byline in his home
town's weekly newspaper at age 16, John B. Saul knew journalism was going to be his life's
profession. From that start in an Ohio farming
community, Saul earned his BA degree in
journalism at The Ohio State University while
working for newspapers, a radio station and a
wire service.
In 1971, he moved to the Pacific Northwest,
working first as a reporter and then a copy
editor at The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash., and
the Bellevue Journal-American (now defunct) in the suburbs of Seattle. At the
J-A, he met Kathy Triesch, another copy editor,
and they married in 1977. Their son, Jacob, was
born in 1983. Kathy is now the associate editor
of Pacific Northwest Magazine at The Seattle
Times.
Saul worked at The Seattle Times for 28 years,
first as a copy editor, then as a news editor and
finally as an assigning editor on the city desk.
He directed coverage of local government,
consumer affairs and transportation.
Since 2005, Saul has been teaching and writing and editing as
a freelancer, covering Thoroughbred horse racing
for The Seattle Times, editing for several
clients and reviewing books on everything from
sports to the state of journalism and U.S.
politics.
He has also found time to earn a master's degree
in English from the University of Washington and
to travel almost two years in Mexico and Central
America.
He loves reading, rugby, biking and hiking.
