Caitlin Mallory, a junior in Radio-TV production, recently received a $1,250 national scholarship from the Broadcast Education Association.

Mallory learned about the scholarship competition from UM Professor Ray Ekness and submitted a five-page application, an affidavit from KECI-TV confirming her employee status, three professors’ recommendation letters, her school transcript and an essay on her career goals to the BEA.

She was "excited" to receive the scholarship award letter while on Thanksgiving break, she said.

After graduating, Mallory plans to work
in television production along the West Coast — perhaps in Eugene, Ore., or Vancouver, Canada — where she anticipates much opportunity to use her skills.

“From what I’ve heard, Vancouver is the New York of Canada,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mallory is building her skills as an employee at KECI-TV, running video fonts for the “Montana Today” Show.

Mallory’s school projects were limited this semester, she said, because not all the studio equipment in the new building was up and running. She looks forward to next semester when the J-school will have the control room ready to go.

According to the BEA, the Harold E. Fellows scholarship is awarded to students in the field of broadcasting who demonstrate evidence of superior academic performance and potential to be an outstanding contributor to the field.

The BEA awards a variety of scholarships annually to BEA-member institutions in support of the broadcast industry in radio, television and other electronic media.
