Faces Profile : Joe Slemberger

By Kayla Matzke

Joe Slemberger spent the summer reviving the Missoula AIDS Council’s newsletter. The senior in print journalism approached the executive director of the Council about an internship for the then-defunct newsletter.

“Their newsletter had been dormant. They had one a while back,” he said.

Slemberger acted as the editor of the quarterly newsletter this summer, writing all of the stories, taking photos and designing the piece in InDesign.

Even though he wasn’t immersed in the “newsroom experience” this summer like many of his peers, Slemberger said that producing the newsletter from scratch was invaluable, and it provided him many opportunities for learning.

“It gave me pretty good experience,” Slemberger said.

Hailing from Great Falls and attending Montana State University in Bozeman for several years before coming to UM, Slemberger said that working for the Missoula Aids Council was a real eye-opening experience.

Slemberger will be helping to produce the Council’s next newsletter, too.

He will graduate from the School of Journalism at the end of fall semester. Once Slemberger leaves the J-School, he said he would like to freelance for a year or so before he begins his career in journalism.
