Photojournalism senior Tiffany Wilson organized the portfolio review held on November 16 at the J-School – the first one in recent years.
Wilson took the initiative to set up the review for photo-J seniors. The idea has been bounced around before in her class.
“We’ve always talked about getting together for a potluck and looking at each other’s work,” Wilson said.
Wilson called photojournalists from around Western Montana to help with the review. Seven photographers participated in giving the students feedback on their work and ideas to strengthen their portfolios.
“We have really great photojournalists in the area and around the state,” Wilson said.
Wilson has traveled internationally, using her photojournalism experience across borders. Recently, she returned from a trip to Rwanda with the nonprofit organization Compassion International. Wilson said she hopes to work for a nonprofit once she has her degree, photographing and teaching people to use cameras in third-world countries.
Next fall Wilson would like to put her Spanish minor to use and study abroad in Chile.
Currently, Wilson’s work is on display at Food for Thought, the café on Arthur Avenue near campus.
Wilson is planning a spring portfolio review, too. She said she would like to incorporate multimedia into it instead of having just a still-image review.
“I just really think we need it to happen. It’s something that’s essential to being a photojournalism student,” she said.
Wilson invited photojournalism junior Bess Brownlee to help her organize the review, hoping that the event will continue after she graduates, in the fall of 2009.
“It would be cool to see it grow into something the J-School does,” Wilson said.
