Garret W. Smith spent his youth on Sieben Livestock, a ranch one-hour’s drive from Cascade, Mont., where the closest school and grocery store were located. Here he learned to appreciate the visual surroundings and uniqueness in the few people one may see in such desolation.

As a freshman in high school he was “the new kid” in Miles City. Mont., where his family moved for employment opportunities. Miles City reinforced his appreciation for the individual and the context in which they live, for it has been called the "Cow Town Capital of the World."

Upon graduation in 2001, Garret traveled to other states for seasonal work, including Idaho, Alaska and Oregon in addition to Montana. He has attended the University of Montana under three majors, finally landing in photojournalism. Photojournalism is now Garret’s passion and he hopes to carry his enthusiasm into all his contemporary work and all that lies in the future. As far as school goes, Garret is marking off the days until May 13.
