Emily Darrell is a first-year graduate student in print journalism. A Virginia native, she has a B.A. in English from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. After finding that this degree was not particularly impressive to prospective employers, she moved to Austin, Texas where she served as an AmeriCorps volunteer, building energy-efficient housing for low-income families.
After her AmeriCorps term ended she worked scoring standardized tests for the state of Texas, waiting tables, and processing honey on a bee farm.
She likes writing about science, nature, food, agriculture, film, travel and literature — almost anything, really, except for the dull and bureaucratic aspects of politics and "administration."
One of her dreams is to write about falconry in Central Asia, and she hopes that next year she will be on the windswept steppes of Mongolia doing just that.
