Football victory goes to broadcast students

A cold and miserably windy Veterans Day didn’t stop the first annual School of Journalism flag football championship.
Print and photo students competed against broadcast and production students in an epic battle played behind Sentinel High School on Play Fair Park. Both sides played hard, gritting through rain and wind gusts of over 35 mph. It was an exciting game with a little bit of everything football fans want.
The broadcast team scored first on a long touchdown pass from quarterback Brandon Gondeiro to John Zimmerman and then again after a beautiful interception by Rob Ashley.
The print team rallied in the second quarter with a stunning 50-yard touchdown run by Jake Grilley. On their next possession, Sammy Pearson of the print team was injured. At first Pearson said he thought he broke his nose, but team members after the game said he was going to be OK, maybe a little sore.
Not to be outdone by their male counterparts, women got in on the action as well. Print senior Jessica Mayrer played a heroic game on the defensive line, keeping blockers from sacking the print quarterback John Cribb. Broadcast senior Melanie Overcast scored a touchdown on a five–yard run for the broadcast side.
At the end of the game, broadcast and production pulled away with a 42-8 victory over print and photo. Players from both teams met at the Union Club afterward to celebrate.
Both sides believe that the football game will be a great tradition in the future and look forward to the rivalry. A print/photo team member says the battle should continue in the spring, possibly over a softball game.
