Police who lie, witnesses with faulty memories,
prosecutors who value winning more than the truth — DNA
evidence has stripped the pretenses from the American criminal
justice system, says a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Maurice
Possley, this fall's Pollner Professor at the J-School, has won
numerous awards for his investigations of criminal justice in
Illinois. His stories prompted the governor to halt executions
in the state and helped exonerate death row inmates.[More]

Digital technology has arrived at the J-School's R-TV Department,
with equipment that's 10 times smaller than the old analog
cassettes. The old three-quarter-inch tape is out, along
with the pain of using 30-year-old technology.“It
was just bad news,” says one broadcast student. “Everything
was being reused over and over again.
