J-school broadcast, print and photo students bring home SPJ Mark of Excellence awards

Two national winners and four national finalists from the University of Montana Journalism School were included in the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2005 Mark of Excellence National Award Winners announced in late May.
R-TV student Jason Cole won the national award in television feature photography for his piece “Haunted Hall.”
The J-School also took home first place in online in-depth reporting for its 2005 Native News Project entitled “Perceptions.”
The four national finalist nominees went to two students, the KBGA News Team and J-School staff. R-TV student Heather Hintze was a finalist in radio news reporting for her story “Daycare Dilemma.” R-TV student Kevin Farmer was a national finalist in the television sports photography for “Lacrosse Team.”
The KBGA News Team was a national finalist in radio in-depth reporting for their coverage of the reoccurring violent attacks in the Missoula downtown community last fall.
The J-School staff was nominated as a national finalist in best all-around independent online student publication for “Reznetnews.org.”
Collegiate journalists across the country submitted 3,100 entries in 43 different categories.
