Broadcast students place first
in national SPJ contest

Two recent graduates of The University of Montana’s School of Journalism have won top honors in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Contest.

Danielle Dellerson of Big Fork and Natalya McLees of Kalispell won first place in the television spot news category. Both are 2002 graduates of the Radio-Television Department. The awards were given at the 2002 SPJ national convention in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sept. 14. Both were on hand to accept their award.

UM broadcast students run jumbo sports screen

The huge screen towering over 20,000 fans at the south end of Washington-Grizzly stadium adds a new luster to Grizzly football. It takes you on the field as Monte the mascot rides his motorcycle, flashes close-ups of the players, pinpoints cheering faces in the crowd, and never misses an opportunity for a slow-motion replay. The action is courtesy of students in UM’s broadcast news and radio/television departments, who direct from a U-Haul trailer parked outside the stadium.

Kaimin veteran relishes new challenge as editor

The new editor at the Montana Kaimin has wasted no time getting her reporters into shape.

Jessie Childress, a senior in UM's School of Journalism, began assigning stories and setting deadlines a week before school started. Childress has been working to improve production at the student-run newspaper and make it easier to read.
