Raised in Mississippi on the barefoot side of the Mason-Dixon Line, Kate Medley, 22, was smitten by the spirit of the mountains several years ago and is now finishing a degree in photojournalism at UM. After a couple years in college, she found it difficult to confine her interests to one subject, so she settled into the journalism school and started exploring them all.
After two months of studying Spanish and politics in Mexico this summer, Kate joined the photo staff at the Charlotte Observer as a summer intern where she made pictures of Phish shows and house fires, NFL games and cop retirement parties. Kate will finish her degree in May and then she’ll think about joining the rest of the degree-bearing members of Missoula’s food service industry.
