There will be three assigned briefs and three unannounced quizzes during the semester. You can “buy” your way out of one brief and one quiz (worth 10 points) by doing a 10-20 minute class presentation.

Your presentation may be on:
1) a case related to the topic of the day  (eg. libel).
2) an issue related to the topic of the day (eg. emerging copyright issues on the Internet).
3) a historical figure or event closely associated with freedom of expression (eg. Henry VIII or the anti-slavery press or the Lindbergh kidnapping trial).

There are just 40 slots available, beginning Tuesday, Feb. 17. The first 20 students who request presentation slots will each be assigned a day in the schedule. The next 20 students will be assigned a second slot on those days.

Note that there are no presentation slots on March 19 (midterm) or May 7 (review).

How to apply for a presentation slot: Shoot me an e-mail (clem.work@umontana.edu) as soon as possible. When the slots are full, they’re full.

I will notify you as soon as I have assigned you to a slot. Then you choose a case, issue or history presentation and email me your choice at least one class before your slot, so I’ll know what you’re going to be doing.

You may use any of the media available in the classroom for your presentation. The easiest is to bring a thumb drive or jump on the Internet, but if you have other ideas, talk to me.

If you have “bought” your way out, you may choose to not submit one assigned brief and not take one quiz, or you may do all briefs and quizzes and I will not count your lowest brief score and your lowest quiz score.
