Internships 2006-2007

University of Montana School of Journalism
Internship postings

The Billings Gazette

The Billings Gazette is accepting applications for its summer 2007 intern position. We'd like the applications in our hands by the end of December.

We ask candidates to send us a cover letter introducing themselves and explaining why they believe a reporting internship at The Billings Gazette would be a valuable part of their journalism education as they work toward a degree and employment as a journalist.

The letter should be accompanied by a resume and a collection of a half-dozen writing samples -- clips from newspapers or copies of relevant class assignments.

The Gazette provides a great learning environment for aspiring journalists. Our intern can expect a wide range of assignments to serve readers in our vast circulation area, which includes the city of Billings, communities in Eastern Montana and Northern Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park.

In addition to tackling daily assignments, the intern will work with editors to identify at least one project to complete during the summer.

Managing editor Kristi Angel will be the primary supervisor of our intern. Other editors and reporters will provide guidance and feedback to our intern whenever appropriate.

Send applications to:

Internship - US Senator Max Baucus

A Washington Internship with Senator Baucus is an active, educational, and para professional experience in the United States Senate as a representative of Senator Baucus and the State of Montana. Interns are employed for each academic semester and during the summer months. Interns may select either part-time or full-time status to correspond with their schedules.

Internships are available in my Capitol Hill office or in any of my Montana offices. Interns have a terrific opportunity to learn more about the legislative process. While the positions are unpaid, most interns agree that this experience gives them valuable insights into the workings of the U.S. Congress and a chance to serve fellow Montanans.

The interns in Senator Baucus' office gain knowledge and experience in three areas of operations: legislative, administrative, and press. Interns are assigned specific legislative responsibilities and assist with all office operations, as necessary.

There also is one reporting internship during the fall in the paper’s Rexburg office.

Adventure Cyclist

We are looking for someone to assist with many of the basic tasks involved in the creation of our magazine Adventure Cyclist. Examples are proofreading, reading and sorting submissions, and, if the intern has strong writing skills, writing articles. This fall and winter, we are also looking for assistance with the creation of The Cyclists' Yellow Pages, our 104-page bicycle-travel resource which features several trip-planning directories and feature stories. There should also be other opportunities as the intern gets an inside look into the creation of a national, 40,000-copy circulation magazine.

We are also in the process of setting up a work-study position for the Cyclists' Yellow Pages. The focus of this position will be assisting us in verifying and organizing the thousands of listings in the CYP. The work will be less varied than the internship, but a good fit for a detail-oriented person with some cycling knowledge.

We may be able to offer a small stipend (in the $250 range).

Best,

Aaron Teasdale

We also invite our interns to attend our weekly publication meetings, where they can observe part of our planning process and partake in discussions concerning current Bugle and Elk Foundation issues.
