Opening and Closing Procedures for LAR Facilities

I. Purpose

This standard operating procedure describes the opening and closing procedures for the Health Science Building (HSB) and Skaggs Building (SB) Laboratory Animal Resource (LAR) Facilities.

II. Responsibility
It is the responsibility of all LAR employees to know and follow all opening and closing procedures to ensure proper security and log maintenance.

III. Procedures for Opening

  • Health Sciences Building: Opening
    • Disarm the alarm.
    • Check phone in office for messages.
    • Put dirty laundry into washer.
    • Unlock all doors.
    • Record all temperature and humidity readings using the log sheet located in HSB 009 (office) above filing cabinet.
    • Fast sheep if needed.
  • North Skaggs Building: Opening
    • Disarm the alarm.
    • Check phone in office for messages.
    • Unlock all doors.
    • Record all temperature and humidity readings using the log sheet located in anteroom.
    • Pull-up and discard dirty sticky mat sheet just inside the entry door. If the last sheet is removed, replace with a clean sticky mat (clean mats are in the hall anteroom where all the tools, etc. are located). Sticky mat sheets should be changed only as needed on weekends.
  • South Skaggs Building: Opening
    • Disarm the alarms in 067 and 068.
    • Check phone in office for messages.
    • Record all temperature and humidity readings using the log sheet located in anteroom.

IV. Procedure for Close Out

  • Health Science Building: Close out
    • Sweep and mop HSB main corridor with bleach in water solution (1:50) using the mop bucket located in the dirty cage wash room.
    • Mop the rodent surgery room (016B), clinical lab (016) and bathroom.
    • Empty all remaining trash from office, bathroom, surgery rooms and dirty cage wash room.
    • Feed fish, frogs and sheep if present in facility
    • Fast sheep or rabbits if needed, or pull sheep water if needed
    • Lock all HSB doors at 4:30pm.
    • Set HSB alarm at 5:00pm.
  • North Skaggs Building: Close Out
    • Sweep and mop SB main corridor with bleach in water solution (1:50) using the mop bucket located in the dirty cage wash room.
    • Mop procedure room SB033 and surgery room 035.
    • Empty all remaining trash from office, surgery rooms and dirty cage wash room.
    • Lock all SB doors at 4:50 pm.
    • Set SB alarm at 4:50 pm.
  • South Skaggs Building: Close Out
    • Sweep and mop SB dirty cage was room, 067, 067A, and 067B with bleach water (1:50) using mop bucket in 068.
    • Empty all remaining trash from all rooms.
    • Set south SB alarm at 4:50 pm.
