The Academic Success Program (ASP) reflects our commitment to support the academic success of our students during their entire law school career.  ASP recognizes that law students come here with diverse cultural, educational and professional backgrounds and seeks to transform all UM law students into self-directed lifelong learners.

Goals

The Academic Success Program reflects our commitment to support the academic success of our students during their entire law school career.  The objectives of ASP are to:

• Support new students in their efforts to demystify the law school experience
• Emphasize intrinsic motivation
• Encourage students to approach learning intentionally to develop a mastery of the learning process, and so a mastery of legal analysis
• Encourage students to recognize the autonomy inherent in professional school and develop an individual approach that will help them reach their professional goals
• Promote exploration of new and varied teaching methods informed by learning styles, multiple intelligences and innovations in adult learning theory
• Promote deliberate development of stronger analytical skills

Services

The commitment of the Blewett School of Law to the academic success of our students begins in the summer prior to the 1L year and continues through the successful completion of the bar exam after law school and includes the following programs, courses and services:

• Work with incoming 1L students prior to the fall semester
• 1L fall semester Introductory Program
• Wisdom Wednesdays, a continuation of the Intro Program during the first four weeks of fall semester
• 1L fall Academic Success course
• 1L spring Academic Success course
• 3L Preparing for the Bar course
• Individualized and confidential work with individual students when requested or indicted

The ASP team includes six 2L and 3L ASP teaching assistants (TAs). In each of the 1L doctrinal courses, a TA will provide very targeted support to students. Much of the work in ASP during the 1L fall semester takes place in small ASP groups, each of which is facilitated by one of the six ASP TAs.
