The "rule of law" ideal has guided Western democracies, especially constitutional democracies, since the 18th century. Can this ideal withstand criticisms leveled by the critical legal studies movement? Students read and discuss the best arguments on both sides of this lively, contemporary debate, and then analyze several contemporary issues in terms of this debate.
