I am enrolled in (or have completed) a law program in my country. May I apply those credits toward a degree at The University of Montana?
Some of your credits may apply toward a degree at The University of Montana. However, even if some of those credits are applied, you must successfully complete a minimum of 60 credit hours at the School of Law to receive a degree from The University of Montana. International students who have legal training in their home country and seek only an overview of American law might consider applying as a Visiting Student. Visiting Students are entitled to enroll in one or two semesters of study, but do not receive a degree from The University of Montana.
How do I prepare for law study in the U.S.?
Law and legal institutions are not independent or autonomous from the rest of the United States society. United States law reflects, for example, (1) its religious and cultural heritage; (2) its political and economic institutions; (3) the ideals and traditions of the 18th century enlightenment; and (4) United States history. The Law School faculty believes, therefore, that prelaw students are best served by a liberal arts program of study which provides insight into these legal contexts. As an international student there are many ways to prepare yourself for a U.S. law school. A year or more of undergraduate study at a United States college or university is helpful as well as studying comparative cultures, religions, political systems and economic systems.
I want to enroll in law school, but do not have the money to pay for it. Is financial aid available?
No. Most United States citizens receive financial aid from the United States government which does not generally provide aid to international students. The School of Law generally provides modest aid to some students. Total expenses for law school (tuition, fees, room and board, books, personal expenses, summer expenses) are set forth in the Financial Aid Budget. An additional $4,000.00 per year should be allowed for an accompanying spouse and an additional $2,000 per year for a dependent.
Is housing available for foreign students?

What happens if I need medical care while in the United States?
Health care costs in the United States are the individual's responsibility. Therefore, The University of Montana requires all international students to enroll in the University's health insurance plan or show proof (in English) of adequate private medical insurance coverage.
