Admissions—Transfer Students

Second-year students' guidelines and application requirements for admission as a transfer student include the following:

  1. completed application for admission;
  2. $60 nonrefundable application fee, or a $30 reapplication fee;
  3. one academic reference from a law school faculty member;
  4. two personal statements—the first statement should describe the applicant's interest in the study and practice of law as well as the reason for their interest in enrolling at The University of Montana School of Law. The second statement should describe an activity, event, or accomplishment and its relationship to the development of one or more of the applicant's personal qualities (for example, writing and speaking skills, care and concern for others, initiative and sustained effort, commitment to political or moral principles);
  5. an official LSDAS report, or a photocopy sent directly from the institution you attend now;
  6. a letter from the dean of the law school previously attended stating the applicant is in good standing and eligible to continue at that institution;
  7. an official transcript of first-year law school courses verifying the average in all law studies for which the student has registered and received a grade is equivalent to that required for graduation from the institution attended. Transfer students must complete at least 60 credit hours of law study in residence to earn a University of Montana law degree.

A ceiling of 80-85 positions is maintained for the second-year class. Within this limitation, the best qualified applicants for admission with advanced standing will be accepted, based upon law school academic performance, including an evaluation of the quality of the school attended. Consideration will also be given to the applicant's cumulative undergraduate grade point average, and LSAT score.
