| Biography |
Dean
Emeritus Mary Kay Kane is the John F. Digardi Distinguished
Professor of Law at the University of California Hastings
College of the Law. She also served as Chancellor.
Her lecture, entitled "The Two Faces of Professionalism,"
discussed how professionalism embraces two distinct,
yet inextricably intertwined, concepts: the way in which
an attorney should practice the art or craft of lawyering,
and the commitment to fostering justice, fairness, and
the preeminence of the "rule of law" as the
means of bettering our society generally. She explored
the elements that comprise each of these concepts, focusing
on how they are exemplified in modern life and why they
are deserving of our dedication.
Dean Kane has served as President of the Association
of American Law Schools and was made a member of the
Standing Committee on Practice and Procedure for the
United States Judicial Conference. She serves as
a member of the Council of the American Law Institute
and the Council of the ABA Selection on Legal Education
and Admissions to the Bar. She has written extensively
in the area of civil procedure.
She was born and raised in Detroit and attended the University
of Michigan where she received a BA in English and a
JD. Her teaching career began in the State University
of New York at Buffalo Law School. She came to
Hastings in 1977. |
