Academic Year only – Maximum of 8 students

Students in the Criminal Defense Clinic represent defendants in serious misdemeanor cases (cases that require appointment of counsel) and occasionally represent clients in uncomplicated felonies. Students participate in all phases of a criminal defense from the initial meeting with their client through acquittal or sentencing and, if necessary, appeal. Criminal Defense Clinic students have argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and have prepared briefs to the Ninth Circuit, the United States Supreme Court, and the Montana Supreme Court. The Criminal Defense Clinic also represents prisoners in habeas proceedings in the United States District Court and in post-conviction proceedings in the state courts, and may engage in other litigation related to the rights of defendants and prisoners.
