Computer Loans

The Missoula Federal Credit Union offers computer loans to UM students at reduced rates. Also, financial aid funds may be available for purchasing a computer. Contact Connie Bowman at the UM Financial Aid office for information about adding funding for a computer purchase to your financial aid package.

Now is the time to buy a laptop for law school.

BUY A RECOMMEND LAPTOP.

You will find our laptop recommendations below. We strongly encourage UM law students to purchase one of the laptop computers we recommend because we offer full in-house, factory-authorized hardware warranty service and software support on recommended models. We cannot offer these same services for non-recommended laptops. We very strongly recommend that you do not purchase an Apple computer because we cannot provide any service for Apple computers.

Ordering Information

To Order

You should order the Dell computer above from the UM Bookstore. Order any of the other computers from Richards Computer. Click on any computer on this page for more ordering information or contact Richards Computer directly:

Delivery

If you purchase any of the laptops we recommend your laptop will be sent to the UM School of Law (no shipping cost). We will set up these machines and configure them for law school use. We are happy to hold them until you arrive. When you do pick up your computer we would like to spend 30 to 45 minutes with you acquainting you with the UM IT environment and with your new computer.

Non-Recommended Laptops

We strongly encourage you to purchase one of the above recommended laptops. If you choose not to, be aware that you will not receive the same level of computer service (see IT policies). If you do choose not to buy a recommended laptop, you should make sure your laptop meets these Minimum Laptop Recommendations.

We very strongly recommend that you not purchase an Apple computer. The IT staff cannot provide any service on Apple computers. In addition, there is no Apple repair service available on the UM campus or in Missoula and if your Apple requires service, you will have to send it to Texas.

Recommended Software

Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10.0 - Required - Free to students, UM site license

WordPerfect X3
- Strongly recommended- Free to students under UM site license

Microsoft Office 2007 - Necessary -- $80 at UM Bookstore with Grizcard

Microsoft OneNote 2007 - Recommended -- $49.95 at UM Bookstore with Griz card.

Full Support Includes Software Installation
When you purchase one of the recommended computers the law school IT staff will pre-configure your computer with all recommended application software and updates (you must purchase Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft OneNote 2007, but we will install the software). We will also install software required for wireless connectivity at the law school as well as drivers and utilities you will need for your course work. In addition we will include all of the Internet bookmarks (favorites) you will need for legal research and for access to all other law school resources.

Other Useful Tools We Recommend

Portable data storage

(USB drives, flash drives, pen drives, thumb drives)

We recommend you purchase a USB drive as a convenient external storage device. You
should purchase a drives that holds at least 1GB.

Cruzer

iPod

  • Class podcasts: Many law school classes are podcast and may be accessed using any laptop computer, but iPods are the best choice for portable access to law school podcasts.

  • Music storage: We strongly recommended against storing large quantities of music on the laptop computer you depend upon for law school use. Doing so will slow your computer's response time and make it more difficult and time consuming to recover from a system failure. Law school technical staff does not have time to recover voluminous music files from crashed systems. If you have a substantial music library, we recommend that you purchase one of the Apple iPods to accommodate stored music or store your music files on a CD or DVD.

MoGo Mouse

If you purchase a tablet PC with no trackpad (or if you just want a portable mouse), you may also want to purchase a MoGo mouse. It requires Bluetooth, but plugs into the PCMCIA slot on the side of the computer where it charges.

In addition to these tools we recommend, there are other tools you may want to purchase including peripherals (printers, mice, etc.) and carrying cases. For these items, visit the UM Bookstore or Richards Computer.
