Laptop Support Policies The IT Department has a very talented but very small IT staff. In order to provide the highest level of support to our students, faculty, and staff the IT Department has implemented a few important policies. Please be aware of these when you request laptop support.
What We Can Do...
Support for Recommended Laptops: The IT Department provides full support for recommended computers. This includes software support and next-day, in-house warranty repairs.
Support for Non-Recommended Laptops: Very limited support is provided for non-recommended computers. No warranty repair service is offered for non-recommended computers. Support for non-recommended laptops is limited to:
-
Laptops running the recommended operating system. (For laptops with a pre-Windows XP operating system, the IT Department can attempt to recover data, but can provide no other services.)
-
Installation of recommended software. Students MUST present original software disks or proof of license before the IT staff can install software.
-
Diagnosis and repair of minor laptop hardware problems:
- Installation of memory upgrades;
- Installation of new hard drives;
- Installation of new network cards, and modems;
- Configuration of existing hardware.
What We Can't Do... NO Support is provided for:
-
Additional computers owned by UM law students. The IT staff can only support one computer per student.
-
Computers owned by friends or relatives of enrolled students. This is a mis-use of state services and is absolutely forbidden. Please do not even ask.
-
Computer peripherals such as printers, scanners, iPods, etc.
