Services
In addition to the specialized services described via the menu at right, the IT Department also offers the following services to all members of the law school community.
The University of Montana provides email accounts for all students, faculty and staff that must be used for all University communications. Although the email system is campus-wide and administered through the UM Computing and Information Technology Department, the law school IT Department can assist with
Internet & Network Access

Wireless internet and network access throughout the law school building and surrounding outdoor areas. Sufficient access points to provide simultaneous access for all students.

LAN (hard wire) internet and network access for all students in various points throughout the law school building. Provides redundancy and faster downloads.

Full internet and network access in library computer lab.

Wireless internet and network access from other parts of campus. Students can print to law school printers and store data to their law school server space from other campus locations such.
Printing & Data Storage

Unlimited free Westlaw and LexisNexis printing for students.

Wireless and LAN printing to printers throughout the law school building.

Individual server space and centralized data storage (2 GB) available to all law students

Centralized data storage (20 GB) available to all law student organizations.

Automated daily backup of individual student and student organization data. Data back-up is stored off-site.

Policies
The IT Department has a very talented but very small IT staff. In order to provide the highest level of support to our students, faculty, and staff the IT Department has implemented a few important policies. Please be aware of these when you request laptop support.
Support for Recommended Laptops: The IT Department provides full support for recommended computers. This includes software support and next-day, in-house warranty repairs.
Support for Non-Recommended Laptops: Very limited support is provided for non-recommended computers. No warranty repair service is offered for non-recommended computers.
Support for non-recommended laptops is limited to:

Laptops running the recommended operating system. (For laptops with a pre-Windows XP operating system, the IT Department can attempt to recover data, but can provide no other services.)

Installation of recommended software. Students MUST present original software disks or proof of license before the IT staff can install software.

Diagnosis and repair of minor laptop hardware problems:
- Installation of memory upgrades;
- Installation of new hard drives;
- Installation of new network cards, and modems;
- Configuration of existing hardware.
NO Support is provided for:

Additional computers owned by UM law students. The IT staff can only support one computer per student.

Computers owned by friends or relatives of enrolled students. This is a mis-use of state services and is absolutely forbidden. Please do not even ask.

Computer peripherals such as printers, scanners, iPods, etc.
