Professor Ed Eck Serves on IRS
Oversight Board
Posted December 28, 2009
Under
the sponsorship of Senator Max Baucus, Ed
Eck was nominated
by President Bush in 2008 to a 5-year term on the Oversight
Board. The Board consists of seven nonpartisan members, the
Secretary of the Treasury and the Commissioner of Internal
Revenue Service. The Board is tasked with supervising the
Internal Revenue Service’s administration of the internal
revenue laws.
In 2009, Eck was selected to chair one of the Board’s
two committees.
The Oversight Board provides the IRS with long-term guidance
and direction, and evaluates the IRS’ progress in improving
its service. It reviews, modifies, and approves IRS strategic
plans and its budget requests, and evaluates IRS efforts
to monitor its own performance. The Board reviews the evaluation
and compensation of senior IRS officials. It also recommends
candidates to the President to serve as IRS Commissioner,
and can recommend a commissioner’s removal.
Eck plans to return to teaching at the School of Law in
the Fall and continue his Board work at a distance. “Although
I am enjoying my work in Washington, I’m looking forward
to returning to Montana, seeing my friends, and applying
what I am learning in the classroom,” Eck said.
Professor Ed Eck is in Washington, DC, for a few months “enjoying
getting an intensive education in the work of the IRS Oversight
Board. “
