On September 11-13, 2009, The University of Denver Sturm
College of Law will host "Legal Education at the Crossroads
v.3: A Conference on Assessment." This conference — the
first of its kind — responds
to the calls for better methods of student, teaching, and
institutional assessment made in the Carnegie Report and
in Best Practices for Legal Education. The conference will
be particularly useful for law teachers and deans interested
or engaged in developing and implementing outcomes measures.
Speakers include UM Law Professor
Greg Munro, a leading expert
on law school institutional assessment,
Steven Bahls, the chair of the ABA committee developing an
outcomes-based accreditation standard, and Christopher Johnson,
former general counsel at General Motors, who will discuss
the real world implications of outcomes assessment. Other
sessions will offer the latest thinking on student and teacher
assessment from law teachers and scholars actively engaged
in implementing and assessing best practices.
"Law schools, professors, and accrediting agencies
are recognizing assessment as a crucial element of education,"
said UM Law Dean Irma Russell. "In addition to assessing
the skills and learning of individual students, the work
of Professor Munro and other experts advances our understanding
of learning and teaching and improves our effectiveness
in preparing lawyers and leaders."
