Students Participate in State Bar CLE
Students from the University of Montana School of Law Mediation Clinic and Mediation Team participated in the State Bar’s Continuing Legal Education program, entitled, “Case Evaluation, Settlement and Mediation.” The CLE program was held May 8 in Helena at the Great Northern Hotel. 3Ls Ben Shumate, Meghan Benson, Brant Beaudry, Shea Sammons and Madison Mattioli, acted as clients and served as mediators in a variety of mediation scenarios.
Conducting actual mediations is not new to this group of law students. During the past year, the Mediation Clinic students have mediated dozens of cases — from Montana Supreme Court appeals, to Justice Court landlord/tenant disputes, to District Court family law property division, to Tribal Court parenting plans — these students have done it all. Role-play exercises were perfect for both honing their skills and learning from other CLE participants and presenters.
This State Bar CLE gave Ben Shumate [3L, Portales, NM] and Meghan Benson [3L Auburn, WA] another opportunity to work together. Shumate and Benson were partners in the Southeast Regional Representation in Mediation Competition in Gainesville, Florida earlier this year, where they placed third.
