Land Use Planning is the study of how local communities plan and regulate the use of their lands. The course covers traditional planning, zoning, and subdivision controls and also examines the following topics:

• agricultural issues in land use
• land use on tribal lands
• local regulation of environmental issues
• the connection between growth and water quality and supply
• environmental justice issues arising from land use decisions
• private land use controls

Students attend live public hearings on land use issues, develop their analytical and presentation skills, and practice ordinance drafting skills. Land Use Planning is a prerequisite course for enrollment in the Land Use Clinic.
